PARK(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where artists, designers and citizens transform parking spots into temporary public parks. In September of 2012, Asakura Robinson teamed up with the ASLA Houston, BetterHouston, Elizabeth Austin Landscapes, Gensler, Houston Tomorrow, Landscape Forms, ParksByYou, and SWA Group to transform three surface parking spaces in a lot at the corner of Main and Capitol in Downtown Houston.
Arriving at 6:30 AM, our team paid the early bird price of $7 each for the use of the spots for the day and proceeded to transform the spaces using astroturf, live plants, street furniture and a shade structure made of colored balloons. Our small parklet served as a welcome respite from the city and garnered attention for our city’s need for more park space. Our intervention even generated an editorial from the Houston Chronicle.
