Asakura Robinson Company provided landscape architectural services for the new Northside Center Lone Star College campus located in Conroe. In acknowledgement of Lone Star’s commitment to sustainability, the 15-acre site features a variety of stormwater best management practices. Naturalized meandering dry streambeds surround the building to direct stormwater runoff to a collection point for underground stormwater harvesting. The rainwater is stored in a tank beneath the parking lot, and is re-used in the campus’s irrigation system. The detention pond was carefully designed to serve as an attractve, useful amenity. The side slopes of the detention pond are heavily planted with trees and shrubs to provide a visual buffer, and one side of the detention pond features grassy steps that can be used as an ‘amphitheater’ setting for outdoor classes or group gatherings. The campus also features other outdoor patios, plazas, and seatwalls to enhance the attractive natural setting of the campus. The project’s total landscape architecture site improvements budget was approximately $400,000.
